Take Me Away Tuesday: Shrimping Southern Style

lifestyle · Uncategorized

There was a slight chill to the air. Enough to where you need to cover one part of your body for warmth and but also keep the other part exposed to cool down. The sky was beautiful. We set out early to meet our crew and see the boat that would take us on a new experience. All I knew was her name, The Lady Jane. It was the best kind of blind date.

Sometimes you are in the mood to sit by a pool with a cocktail. Other times a trip isn’t a trip without an experience. Well, that is what we were in the mood for. Friends of ours ( Kapil and Gina) suggested meeting up on Saint Simon’s Island to go shrimping. I had never been to either the location or shrimping, so I was game.

We parked the car and walked around the side of a wooden building. There she floated, The Lady Jane.

Wet set off. The crew taught us about the waterways and the local ecology. Then it was time to lower the net. We caught a lot, but none of it was shrimp. That just meant that we were able to try another location.

We put the net down again and had success.

As I leaned back against the rail of the boat, I was taken by the beauty of the net coming back up from the water. In that moment, I knew why these men did this for a lively hood, and I was thankful that they shared a peek with us.

A good sign that we were catching more and more in the net, was the increasing number of stowaways.

Now let me just say that what I have been eating all my life, that I thought was fresh shrimp, is not what true fresh shrimp tastes like. They boiled our catch right on the boat.

They simply melted in our  mouths. The flavor was not “like chicken”. It was light, it was all its own, and it was perfection.

We headed back to the King and Prince Resort. We sat on the sand and just enjoyed the sound of the ocean. If you are looking for a weekend getaway that melts the stress, this should be on your list.

We flew kites. Took pictures. Enjoyed each others company. Saint Simon’s Island in the spring, a place of peace.
